The Gardens just announced the immediate closure of its original downtown Edmonton location, adding to the list of restaurants and bars closing in the area.

If you aren’t familiar, The Gardens is a local sports bar that originally opened in downtown Edmonton before recently expanding and opening another location this year. Now, Wîhkwêntôwin will be its only standing location, as the doors on its downtown spot close permanently.

“Operating a small, independent business in downtown Edmonton over the years has been a journey filled with incredible moments, but it has also come with some immense growing challenges,” reads the team’s post on Instagram.

Edmonton restaurant closures have been heard repeatedly throughout these past few weeks. From Wilfred’s to Zymo, countless restaurants and bars have shut their doors due to struggles surrounding operating in the downtown core.

Once again, business owners point their fingers toward City leadership itself.

“Unfortunately, a distinct lack of support and viable solutions from the city leadership for downtown businesses has made continuing operations at this address a challenge,” the team continues. “Small businesses are the lifeblood of any vibrant downtown, yet navigating these hurdles without proper backing has left us with no choice but to say goodbye to our 102nd Street location.”

The Wîhkwêntôwin spot, which will remain open, is described by the business as “a fresh take on the neighbourhood pub.” With a spacious patio, great drinks, delicious food, and amazing energy, you’ll get everything you need, right here.

“The address may be changing, but our commitment to this community isn’t going anywhere,” the team affirms. “We’re ready to welcome you with open arms, incredible food, cold drinks, and the warm atmosphere you’ve always known us for.”
