Restaurant closures have been hitting Edmonton left and right this year. In the past few weeks, we’ve continued to see a rising number of spots shutting their doors, and we’re here to round up some of the losses.

From community favourites to newcomers, there’s been a wide range of restaurants lost. No matter the spot, our condolences go out to each and every community behind these beloved establishments.

These restaurant closures have been hitting everyone hard, so we’re here to pay our respects.

PlayWright

Nestled in the local Citadel Theatre was a casual fine-dining restaurant with some excellent dishes. After almost two years, PlayWright announced its closure in June of this year, attributing it to “operational difficulties.”

Address: 10177 99th St. NW, Edmonton, Alta.

DRTY Ice Cream opened its downtown outpost inside Foosh in January, but on Wednesday, July 22, it announced it would be shutting the location down.

The team noted a list of factors contributing to the closure, including “heavy construction, random road closures, expensive parking, and little to no foot traffic.”

This spot came to Edmonton in the peak era of arcade bars. With games, drinks, and a cool atmosphere, it was no shock that this place quickly filled up on evenings and weekends with great energy.

It officially closed its doors after a party to remember on Sunday, July 26.

Address: 10141 109th St. NW, Edmonton, Alta.

Bündok

Bündok is yet another restaurant located in Edmonton’s downtown core that closed this year, joining an ongoing list of many excellent spots in the city that have shuttered. It closed the same weekend as Greta.

Address: 10228 104th St. NW, Edmonton, Alta.

Located in a quaint 100-year-old heritage brick building, Wilfred’s originally opened in 2018. This popular brunch spot had a grip on Edmonton’s Brewery District, and it’s been busy for just over eight years.

Its last day open was on Saturday, July 26, sending itself off with a huge community turnout.

Address: 10429 121st St. NW, Edmonton, Alta.

Zymo

Zymo is yet another restaurant that has closed this month in downtown Edmonton, adding, once again, to the long list of restaurants that have already shut their doors.

Dalla Tavola Zenari was the restaurant that had previously occupied the same space as Zymo, having lasted around 40 years. Zymo, however, only lasted less than a year.

Address: 10166 100a St. NW, Edmonton, Alta.
