Construction on Stony Plain Costco with a liquor store and gas bar begins soon

Construction on a new Costco in Stony Plain, just west of Edmonton, will begin shortly, with a Summer 2027 opening date being eyed.
News of the long-awaited, long-rumoured Costco broke yesterday evening, when the independent commercial real estate advisory firm Hughes Commercial Realty Group (HCR) updated its brochure on Sept. 14, 2026, for the Stony Plain Power Centre/Business Park, which is situated along Highway 16A and Veterans Blvd.
Daily Hive spoke with Scott Hughes, broker/owner at the HCR Group, about what to expect from this new Costco location and its long journey to reality.

Early details about the Stony Plain Costco location include a very large site, with the building being constructed on a 20-acre parcel of land. It will also have a gas bar and liquor store, and there will be around 1,000 parking stalls.
Hughes added that, in terms of the services and land preparation for the Costco location, that process is happening right now. Phase two for the construction of the building will be tendered and begin rather shortly, with a planned opening in Summer 2027.
He also ran the numbers with an experienced builder regarding a ballpark figure for the construction cost of the Costco, ending up with an estimate of a +/- $50 million project once it is complete.
“So pretty fast builds, and that’s what Costco is known for. Once they make a decision and pull it in, then they move fast,” Hughes said. “It’s been a long time. We’ve been working to secure Costco at this location, and they most definitely reviewed, you know, between Spruce and Stony very heavily and decided to locate to this particular site.”

The new location is also strategically located to serve not just Parkland County and west Edmonton, but also much of west central Alberta, with the hopes of attracting folks from areas such as Drayton Valley, Whitecourt, Edson, and Jasper.
Hughes added that thanks to the teamwork with the Town of Stony Plain, the long journey to seeing a Costco come to the Stony Plain and Spruce Grove area is now a reality.

“We worked very hard to sell them on this location and this site, and as did the Town of Stony Plain. We worked as a team all together, and they finally agreed, and we’ve been working the past several years with Costco, just to make sure you know all the ‘i’s got dotted, and ‘t’s got crossed. It’s a very good news story for Stony Plain.”
As for a statement about the Stony Plain location from Costco itself, the company “cannot comment on locations that will be opening more than three months from today,” per its media request form.
