Construction is finally underway on the long-empty Wild Earth site in Edmonton
There’s finally something going up on the site of the former Wild Earth Foods grocery store, six years after the building came down.
The neighbourhood grocery store permanently closed in 2017 after serving the community for 85 years. It shut down to make way for a 28-storey condo tower, but the lot has sat empty for years.
Ground has finally been broken over the past few weeks, and work is underway on the empty space at the corner of 99 Street and 89 Avenue.
Taking its place is Junction 99, a 165-unit residential complex featuring a mix of studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments.
Being built by Pangman Development Corporation, it will include a fitness centre, pet salon, surface and underground parking for vehicles and bicycles, indoor and outdoor amenity spaces, and a bike repair and wash area.
Construction was originally expected to begin in late 2024. But here we are, in the latter half of 2026.

The project has been scaled back considerably from the original 28-storey tower proposal, with the new building coming in at six storeys.
Still, it’ll be a welcome addition to a corner of Strathcona that has seen plenty of redevelopment in recent years.
The old Catholic Services building has been converted into Frank’s Pub, Porch Light Books, and professional offices, while across the street, the old Todd’s Cleaners building is now home to The Colombian.
Last summer, Made by Marcus also opened up shop nearby at 9853 89th Ave. NW.
