Phil Darlington leaves Global News Edmonton after eight years

A lot of changes are happening right now at Global News Edmonton, and while many have happened behind the cameras, it appears another on-camera personality has left.

Weather specialist Phil Darlington is no longer appearing on weekdays on Global Edmonton’s Global News Hour at 6.

Darlington’s bio now describes him as a “former employee” who worked as a weather specialist at Global News from 2018 to 2026.

Born and raised in Toronto, Darlington began his journalism career at York University’s Excalibur before moving to TV. He went on to work as a general assignment reporter at Rogers, a video journalist and weather anchor at CKPR in Thunder Bay, and a weather specialist at CTV Regina.

Darlington moved to Edmonton in 2018 after joining Global News. He initially worked as the weather specialist for Global News at 11 before moving to Global News Morning in February 2023.

Darlington replaced longtime and beloved weather specialist Mike Sobel, who retired in December 2022.

He later shifted back to the afternoon and evening broadcasts, most recently appearing as the weather specialist on Global News Hour at 6.

It is not clear why Darlington departed Global News or whether his exit is connected to recent restructuring at Corus Entertainment.

Daily Hive reached out to Corus for comment but had not heard back at the time of publication.

Darlington’s departure comes at a time of major changes at Global News Edmonton. Last week, we found out that Global News Morning cut its airtime from four hours to three, running from 6 to 9 a.m.

Another major change took effect on Tuesday, when the technical side of the morning show moved from Edmonton to Toronto.

That move came after 28 people at Global News studios in Alberta were laid off in mid-July, when parent company Corus Entertainment confirmed it was moving its Calgary and Edmonton news production east.

Corus Entertainment also cut more jobs in late August. The decision will impact positions at Global BC, Global National, and across its talk radio network, including 640 Toronto (CFIQ-AM).
