Edmonton’s new $153M velodrome and rec centre has an opening date
Edmonton’s long-anticipated rec centre and indoor velodrome finally has an opening date, with the City of Edmonton confirming the swanky new facility will open early in the new year.
According to the most recent update, the copper-clad Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre opens to the public ahead of schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026.
The $153.4-million facility, located in Coronation Park near 111th Avenue and 142nd Street, will serve both community recreation and high-performance sport. It includes amenities like a fitness centre, training studio, walking and running track with a 333-metre outer lane, and a 250-metre Category A indoor cycling track with seating for up to 940 spectators.
It also connects to the newly rehabilitated Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre with a 50-metre pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and a new cold plunge, plus a bouldering wall, multi-purpose courts, an “urban court,” a spin studio, indoor playground, child-minding area, Canadian Sport Institute office, and a Second Cup.

With a pool, track, and cycling loop all under one roof, Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre is set to become the first indoor triathlon training facility in North America.
“We can’t wait to open our newest recreation centre in the city,” said Brad Badger, director of physical activity and sports centres.
“The experiences that this facility offers will draw in people from the local north central area, across the city, the province and beyond. This facility demonstrates that Edmonton is a premier fitness and training destination for the community, triathletes and cyclists.”
Construction on the project began in Spring 2022 following a 2021 design phase. The project remains under budget and ahead of schedule, the City says.
More information about the rec centre’s opening will be shared closer to the opening date.
