Lauren Kyle shares hilarious McDavid first date story from when he was a teenage Edmonton Oilers rookie

There may not be a better hockey player on the planet than Connor McDavid, but even the Edmonton Oilers superstar was susceptible to an embarrassing first-date story in his teens.

The reigning Conn Smythe trophy winner tied the knot with longtime girlfriend Lauren Kyle last summer in an extravagant wedding. That was the culmination of a relationship that started 10 years ago after the couple was set up on a blind date by then-Oilers teammate Luke Gazdic.

McDavid was just an 18-year-old rookie when he went on that date with Kyle. She revealed a funny, albeit a bit embarrassing, story about the Oilers captain on that date in a recent rinkside interview with ESPN’s Kat Ellis.

“We were set up on kind of like a blind-ish date in Toronto,” Kyle said. “That was 10 years ago now… He was 18, and I was 19. It was funny because I had to use my ID to get us a bottle of wine because he was underage.”

It’s hard to believe that McDavid, of all people, had to ask his first date to pick up the wine, but they don’t have underage drinking exceptions for talented athletes.

Kyle didn’t care about having to whip out the ID on the first date so the two could have a romantic outing complete with some wine. The couple has been inseparable throughout the majority of McDavid’s NHL career. While they are both from the Toronto area, the couple had laid down more than a few roots in Edmonton.

The expectation is that McDavid will sign another contract extension with the Oilers this summer while Kyle continues to pursue multiple business ventures in the Alberta capital. She already has an interior design studio set up and recently launched a fashion brand under the name of Sports Club Atelier, which has partnered up with the Oilers for a collection, the first of what she hopes is many with other NHL teams.

Sports Club designed custom WAG jackets for Team Canada and Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

“We’re doing another [collection] in the Spring, and we’re hoping to go to other teams,” Kyle told Ellis. “Once they’re sold out, they’re sold out. Everything is limited edition to that collection.”

On top of all that, Kyle is also planning on opening up a brand-new bar on Jasper Avenue this summer named Bar Trove.

We’re sure McDavid won’t have to have an ID handy when ordering wine at that particular establishment.
