McDavid's wife Lauren Kyle designed WAG jackets for Canada and another 4 Nations team

Lauren Kyle’s husband, Connor McDavid, might be one of Canada’s biggest stars at the 4 Nations Face-Off, but she’s actually got a bit of a vested interest in one of their biggest international rivals.

While the tournament’s opening two games have been thrilling — including a 4-3 overtime win on Wednesday night for Canada over Sweden, many people have been paying attention to one of hockey’s best off-ice traditions: the WAG jacket.

Popularized by wives and girlfriends (hence, WAG) around the NHL and other sports, the WAG jacket is traditionally made by players’ partners each year around the postseason.

But with the NHL opting for a new mid-season international tournament this year, Kyle was just the woman for the job to help design Canada’s jackets — as well as Sweden’s.

Kyle, who runs the fashion brand Sports Club Atelier that has also collaborated with, you guessed it, the Edmonton Oilers, workshopped the final product for the two teams that met in the tournament’s opening game.

Given that both Viktor Arvidsson and Matthias Ekholm play for Sweden and McDavid’s Edmonton Oilers, there was likely a natural connection for Kyle to offer up her services.

Meanwhile, USA’s WAG jackets had a No. 13 patch in honour of the late Johnny Gaudreau, who would’ve likely been a key player for the Americans in the tournament.

And rounding out the fourth nation in the tournament is Finland, who opted for a trench coat-style blue jacket.

The 4 Nations Face-Off continues on Saturday in a doubleheader that should be one of the most memorable days of international hockey ever. Sweden and Finland face one another at 1 pm ET/10 am PT, while Canada and USA headline a matchup on Saturday at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT. Both games will be taking place at the Bell Centre in Montreal before the tournament moves to Boston on Monday for the round-robin finale and next Thursday’s winner-take-all final.
