Long weekends mean time spent with friends and family, an extra day off, and, unfortunately, some serious road congestion.
If you’re planning on taking a short road trip this weekend, plan ahead. Some roads will be closed for construction and events that will be happening over the Heritage Day weekend.

Here are some roads that will be closed, according to a release from the City of Calgary:
Southwest closures
Glenmore Trail
- August 3 to August 4 (7 am to 7 pm): One eastbound lane between 37 Street and Crowchild Trail will be closed. Major delays expected in the eastbound direction on Glenmore Trail
Alternatives:
- North-south routes: Elbow Drive; Macleod Trail; and Deerfoot Trail
- East-west routes: Glenmore Trail; east of Crowchild Trail; Heritage Drive; Anderson Road
Crowchild Trail fly-over
- 9 pm on August 2 to 5 am on August 6: Crowchild Trail fly-over to eastbound Glenmore Trail from southbound Crowchild Trail will be reduced to one lane. Major delays expected in southbound direction on Crowchild Trail
Alternative:
- North-south routes: Elbow Drive; Macleod Trail; and Deerfoot Trail
- East-west routes: Glenmore Trail; east of Crowchild Trail; Heritage Drive; Anderson Road
14 Street SW
- August 3 to August 5 (7 am to 7 pm), and August 6 to August 7 (9 am to 7 pm, non-peak direction): Two lanes will be open on northbound 14 Street SW between Heritage Drive and 75 Avenue SW
- 9 pm on August 2 to 5 am on August 3 : Multiple lanes closed on 14 Street SW between 90 Avenue SW and Heritage Drive. All traffic will be shifted to the west side of 14 Street
Macleod Trail ramp
- 9 pm on August 1 to 5 am on August 2: ramp closure on southbound Macleod Trail to Shawville Boulevard SW
Crowchild Trail access from 54 Avenue SW
- August 2 (10 am to 2 pm) and August 3 (8 am to noon): Access to Crowchild Trail from westbound 54 Avenue SW will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to 50 Avenue SW via 21 Street SW
77 Street SW
- 9:30 am on August 2 to 5 am on August 5: Road closed on 77 Street at Spring Valley View SW. Use alternative routes provided.
11 Avenue SW
- August 3 (7 am to noon): Reduced lanes on 11 Avenue SW between 12 Street and 13 Street SW
Northwest/southwest closures
Crowchild Trail upgrades
August 2 to August 3
- 9 am to 3 pm: Single lane closure along northbound Crowchild Trail to westbound 5 Avenue NW
- 9 am to 3 pm: Single lane closure along eastbound Memorial Drive/Parkdale Boulevard and a single lane closure along eastbound Bow Trail
- 10 pm on August 2 to 8 am on August 3: Full closure of eastbound Memorial Drive/Parkdale Boulevard to southbound Crowchild Trail ramp
- 10 pm on August 2 to 5 am on August 3: Full closure of southbound Crowchild Trail to 12 Avenue SW east (via 10 Avenue SW) ramp
August 3 (7 am to 3 pm)
- Single lane closure along northbound Crowchild Trail to westbound 5 Avenue NW
August 6 to September
- Single lane daytime closures along Crowchild Trail (on either side of the Crowchild and Kensington intersection)
- Single lane closures along Kensington Road (on either side of the Crowchild and Kensington intersection)
Nightly (9 pm to 5 am)
- Single and double lane closures along northbound and southbound Crowchild Trail (between Bow Trail and 5 Avenue NW)
- Single lane closures along 10 Avenue SW (under Crowchild Trail)
- Single and double lane closures along eastbound Bow Trail (over Crowchild Trail)
- Increase in activity at intersection of Bow Trail and 10 Avenue SW, and intersection of Crowchild Trail and 5 Avenue NW
Northeast closures
Memorial Drive NE
- 6 am on August 3 to 5 am on August 6: Reduced lanes and two-way traffic on south side of Memorial Drive NE between 36 Street and 44 Street NE
Southeast closures
Macleod Trail
- 8 pm on August 2 to 5 am August 6: Macleod Trail SE will be reduced to one northbound lane between 17 Avenue and 14 Avenue SE with access to 17 Avenue SW
- Motorists advised to use alternative routes
162 Avenue SE interchange
- 9 pm on August 3 to 5 am August 4 : Interchange closed
4 Avenue SE
- 6 am on August 3 to 5 am on August 5: Reduced lanes on 4 Avenue SE at MacLeod Trail
- Motorists should expect delays
Special event road closures
Chasing Summer-August 3 to 5 (11 am to 1 am)
- Barlow Trail closed between Memorial Drive SE and 17 Avenue SE between 11 am and 1 am daily
- Right lane of the exit ramp from eastbound Memorial Drive SE to Barlow Trail SE will be closed between 11 am to 8 pm daily
- Exit ramp will be closed to all traffic except taxis between 8 pm to 1 am daily
- Speeds on westbound Memorial Drive SE will be restricted to 60 km/h during the event
Inglewood Sunfest-August 3 (6 am to 8 pm)
- 9 Avenue SE will be closed from 11 Street to 14 Street SE
- 12 Street and 13 Street SE will be closed north and south of 9 Avenue SE with local traffic only
- Motorists advised to drive with caution, watch for pedestrians and avoid area by using alternative routes
Tour de Bowness Hill Climb-August 4 (8 am to 2 pm)
- Mackay Road NW will be reduced to single lanes northbound and southbound
- Motorists advised to drive with caution, watch for pedestrians and avoid area by using alternative routes
Bow Cycle Tour de Bowness and Street Festival-August 5 (5 am to 5 pm)
- Bowness Road NW will be closed between 62 Street and 66 Avenue NW
- Bowwood Drive NW will be closed between 63 Street and 66 Avenue NW
- 36 Avenue NW will be closed at Bow Anne Road NW
- 63 Avenue NW will be closed between Bowness Road and Bow Crescent NW
- 64 Street will be closed between Bowness Road and Bow Crescent NW
- 65 Street NW will be closed between Bowness Road and Bow Crescent NW
- Motorists advised to drive with caution, watch for pedestrians and avoid area by using alternative routes
