Japanese cafe in Calgary set to close less than a year after opening

A Japanese cafe in Calgary is set to close its doors this month, less than a year after opening.

Nomi Cafe, a Beltline spot brought to life by the team behind Ryuko, has revealed with “heavy hearts” that it will be saying farewell, with its final day of operation on Oct. 31.

“Nomi has always been a passion project close to our hearts, which makes saying goodbye especially difficult,” the team said in an Instagram post.

“As much as we wish we could continue, with our other commitments and responsibilities, we’ve come to realize that we can no longer give Nomi the time and attention it truly deserves. It wasn’t an easy decision, and we’re incredibly sad to see this chapter come to an end.”

The spot, located just next door to Ryuko’s Beltline location, first opened in December 2025, where it served its signature matcha lattes, coffee, and small bites.

In September, the team also made the decision to close its Japanese eatery and convenience store concept, Koko. However, Ryuko and Sushi Jun are going from strength to strength, with the former opening a new location over the summer, and the latter being long-listed for Air Canada’s Best New Restaurants for 2026.

Nomi will still be serving up coffee and matcha from its 10th Avenue home until the end of the month, so there are still a few days to say goodbye.
