A popular Canadian shawarma chain is expanding into Western Canada this weekend, and Calgary will be home to its first location.

Shelby’s Shawarma is set to open at 9110 Macleod Trl. SE on Sunday, Oct. 25, with a grand opening bringing its signature shawarma wraps, bowls, and loaded fries to Calgary.

To celebrate, the first 100 customers will get a free Shawarma Boutine, which comes loaded with crispy fries, chicken, garlic sauce, boutine sauce, chipotle sauce, and feta cheese.

The restaurant will also offer 50 per cent off wraps, bowls, and signature menu items throughout opening day, from 12 to 9 p.m. Both deals are available in-store only, and the free Boutines are available while supplies last.

There will also be a few other things happening throughout the day, with face painting, live caricature artists, games, and prizes planned for the grand opening. The event is free to attend and will run from noon to 9 p.m.

Shelby’s started as a food trailer in Lambeth, Ont., in 2015, founded by two friends, Yazan El-Shalabi and Yasser Ali. The chain now has more than 50 locations across Canada, and Calgary marks its first step into Alberta and Western Canada. According to the company, more locations are planned across Alberta in the coming years.

Shelby’s Shawarma is joining a long list of chains that have opened on Macleod Trail this year, including Shake Shack, Dave’s Hot Chicken, and most recently, Wingstop, which just opened its largest Canadian location at Chinook Centre.
