World-renowned restaurant known for its Japanese udon opens in Calgary this month

Get ready, Calgary, as we finally have an opening date for the city’s first Marugame Udon, and it’s so soon.

Just days after announcing it would be slightly delaying its opening, the famous Japanese restaurant will officially be welcoming Calgarians to its CrossIron Mills location on Dec. 26.

The fast-casual, 50-seat restaurant features a theatre-style kitchen, where diners will get a front row seat where they can watch the entire udon-making process from beginning to end.

Marugame Udon will be bringing some of its fan-favourite dishes to YYC, including its Kake Udon, Nikutama Udon, and the Chicken Katsu Curry with Udon. Each dish is made to order using freshly prepared udon noodles.

The noodle spot first opened in Japan in 2000, where it gained recognition for its Sanuki Udon, a style originating from Kagawa Prefecture in southernĀ Japan.

It sticks to the basics, making everything in-house, including its noodles, which, in true form to tradition, are made with just flour, water, and salt.

Since its conception, Marugame has opened over 1,000 restaurants, spanning several continents. In each of its restaurants, diners can watch its hand-crafted udon bowls and tempura being prepared right before their eyes.

After years of anticipation, Marugame opened its first Canadian outpost in Vancouver last year to much fanfare.
