Calgary just got its first Jimmy John's location and here's what to expect
It feels as though it’s been a long time coming, but a super popular sandwich shop with locations all over the world has finally opened its first Calgary location.
Back in 2024, U.S. sandwich chain Jimmy John’s opened its first location in Canada, and since then, the brand has been making its way across the country, one province at a time.
After opening its first Alberta location in Sherwood Park, it’s now Calgary’s turn, with Jimmy John’s first YYC outpost opening in the heart of the University District. Of course, we had to go check it out.

Jimmy John’s is exactly what you’d expect from a classic sandwich chain, with black, shiny tiled walls, a large area dedicated to pumping out sandwiches, and a fountain drink machine.
But be warned: there are only a handful of tables, so it may fill up very quickly. Luckily, all sandwiches are able to be taken to go, to enjoy at home or even in the car if you simply can’t wait that long.

Each Jimmy John’s sandwich is available as a classic six-inch or large 12-inch, depending on just how hungry you are. All of which are loaded with layers of meat, veggies, or cheese in a number of different combinations.
We decided to opt for two Jimmy John’s signatures, the first of which was the Italian Night Club, which features salami, capocollo, ham, provolone, onion, lettuce, tomato, mayo, oregano-basil, and a splash of oil and vinegar.
Another popular sando is the Chicken Bacon Ranch, with shredded chicken, crispy bacon, kickin’ ranch for a hint of spice, and arugula.
Both sandwiches were a little on the messy side (as any good sandwich should be, in our opinion), but very flavourful.
We also had to grab some Jimmy Chips, and fun fact, these are actually all made in Calgary. They are a good, extra crispy chip that complements the sandwiches well.
While Jimmy John’s isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel, there are some pretty tasty sandwiches that are well worth a shot next time you’re looking for a quick lunch in the University District.
To celebrate its opening, guests will be able to grab $5 classic sandwiches from Sept. 1 to 4, and then a free combo upgrade with the purchase of a large sandwich on Sept. 5 and 6.
Students, health-care workers, and front-line workers will also receive a 10 per cent discount for a limited time.
