Calgary Flames lose Ryan Lomberg to another team in free agency

The Calgary Flames have suffered their first loss of free agency.

It’s been an interesting start to the offseason for Craig Conroy and the Flames. The team is coming off a busy draft, adding top prospect Carson Carels to the organization, as well as Jarome Iginla’s son Joe.Ā

That good news came to an end in the opening hours of free agency, as Ryan Lomberg will be leaving the club. The 31-year-old forward has inked a two-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets that carries a $1.3 million cap hit.

The announcement was made by Lomberg’s agency, Bartlett Hockey, on social media.

Lomberg spent the last two seasons with the Flames, having served in a depth role and becoming a bit of a fan favourite in the process.Ā

During his two years in Calgary, he put up a total of seven goals and 22 points over 137 games. He was more well-known for his ability to get under the skin of his opponents rather than having a big offensive impact on the ice.

The Richmond Hill native started his career with the Flames, joining the organization during the 2015-16 season, before signing with the Florida Panthers in 2020. From there, he helped the Panthers win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history against the Edmonton Oilers in 2024.

He rejoined the Flames the summer after winning the Stanley Cup, inking a two-year deal with a $2 million cap hit that expired on Wednesday.
