Former Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom is on the move once again.

It was announced early Tuesday morning that the 36-year-old has been traded from the New Jersey Devils to the Florida Panthers in a blockbuster deal that will see Evan Rodrigues as the main piece headed the other way.

Markstrom, 36, has spent the past two years with the New Jersey Devils. The Devils acquired him from the Flames in exchange for defenceman Kevin Bahl and a first-round pick.

Unfortunately for Markstrom, his time with the Devils didn’t work out as either side had hoped.

After a mediocre 2024-25 season, Markstrom struggled immensely in 2025-26, posting a 3.07 GAA along with a .883 SV% in 44 appearances. Those struggles seemingly prompted Devils management to move on.

This move makes plenty of sense for the Panthers, as it doesn’t appear as though they will be re-signing pending UFA Sergei Bobrovsky. It’s also worth noting that their backup from last season, Daniil Tarasov, is also a pending UFA.

Early into the 2025-26 season, Markstrom agreed to a two-year, $12-million extension, which will carry a cap hit of $6 million. The deal includes a 20-team no-trade list, though it’s no surprise to see Markstrom agree to this trade. Not only are the Panthers a perennial Stanley Cup contender, but they are also the team with whom he began his NHL career.

As for Rodrigues, he’s set to enter the final season of a four-year contract which carries a cap hit of $3.02 million. The 32-year-old scored 11 goals and 31 points in 69 games this past season.

The Devils are also adding some depth in Jesper Boqvist. The 27-year-old, who carries a $1.5-million cap hit, scored four goals and 13 points with the Panthers this past season.
