Calgary Flames fans shouldn’t be expecting to see Blake Coleman traded in the immediate future.
The 34-year-old is a strong candidate to be moved between now and the 2027 trade deadline, given that he’s entering the final year of his contract. Sportsnet’s Eric Francis is reporting that Coleman has even submitted his 10-team trade list. However, Francis also reported that things have been quiet.
Coleman, who carries a $4.9-million cap hit, was one of just three 20-goal scorers on the Flames roster last season. He wound up finishing with exactly 20 goals and 35 points in 69 games.
Those numbers fall in line with what Coleman has done his entire career, showing that he still has plenty of game left. It isn’t just offence with him, either, as he is strong defensively and can kill penalties.
In other words, this is a very valuable player, and one that playoff-bound teams across the NHL will start to gain more interest in as the year progresses.
With free agency set to kick off on Wednesday, teams need to be careful from a salary cap perspective. That, at least for now, puts a Coleman trade on the back burner, though that could change later in the offseason or even during the 2026-27 campaign.
As was mentioned two weeks ago, the Flames certainly aren’t panicking over this situation. If the trade market for Coleman doesn’t pick up, GM Craig Conroy appears to be open to re-signing the two-time Stanley Cup champion.
It will be an ongoing situation for Flames fans to monitor over the course of the offseason, but at this point in time, it feels as though there’s a strong chance Coleman is still in Calgary by the time the 2026-27 season gets underway.
