Additional recreation facilities are going to reopen in Calgary this week

Good news for sports lovers – the City of Calgary is reopening more recreation facilities this month, including eight indoor artificial turf fields at the Calgary Soccer Centre.

Since opening several facilities earlier in February, the City has seen a high demand from sport groups and individuals who are looking to book one-on-one training or minor sport training activities.

This demand has led to the decision to open additional locations, beginning this week. Be aware that all facilities must be booked in advance.

Previously, six arenas and four pools reopened for bookings, and, starting February 25, four additional ice sheets and eight indoor artificial turf fields will be available.

Recreation facilities can only be booked for one-on-one sport training with a certified or paid trainer or for limited minor sport (under 18 years) group training activities.

Minor sport training can be held for up to a maximum of 10 individuals per group, which includes participants, coaches, and trainers.

Currently, sites cannot be used for games, league play, swim lessons, registered programs, individual workouts, or group exercise.

Indoor public skating, public swimming, and group fitness activities are part of later phases of the provincial government’s plan for reopening.

The additional City of Calgary recreational facilities that will be available to book starting this week include:

  • Optimist and George Blundun arenas (two ice sheets) – 5020 26th Avenue SW
  • Stew Hendry & Henry Viney arenas (two ice sheets) – 814 13th Avenue NE
  • Calgary Soccer Centre (eight indoor artificial turf fields) – 7000 48th Street SE

The City will consider opening other locations as needed.

The decision to reopen recreation facilities is based on several factors, including the demand for one-on-one and limited minor sport activities, adherence to public health orders, and the ability to re-staff.

Bookings for arenas and pools can be made online. Soccer Centre availability can be viewed online, with booking inquiries directed to [email protected] or 403-268-3800.

All other indoor City-operated recreation amenities, including weight rooms, remain closed until further notice.
