While we may only be heading into the first week of October, it appears that Old Man Winter just couldn’t wait any longer before paying a visit to Calgary, as residents in and around the city woke up to a fresh blanket of the white stuff on Sunday morning.

And according to Environment Canada, snow warnings are still in effect for areas of southern Alberta.

In the meantime, those who woke up to the snow this morning shared their shots on social media.

And while it might be hard to believe considering how it currently looks outside, snow in Calgary during September isn’t all that ordinary — even in a city that is known for its weird weather.

According to weatherstats.ca, YYC has only experienced snow on the ground once in the past decade. Though when it did hit, it hit hard.

September 2014 was the last time snow was seen on the ground in Calgary, accumulating to a total of 10 cm before melting away in the snowless October that followed.

In total, there have been  just seven instances of September snow on the ground in Calgary over 40 years, meaning that while this weekend’s weather may not be entirely out of left field, it’s definitely going to be one for the history books.

Well, that’s some cold comfort, at least.
