The Calgary Flames are in a tightly contested race for the playoffs right now, but it’s the future of this organization that should have fans excited.
Despite not having as many early first-round picks in recent years as fans would like, the Flames have done a great job at drafting as of late and have stockpiled some very intriguing prospects as a result. Even better is that several of those prospects are having huge seasons in 2024-25. Here’s a look at how several of them are performing.
Zayne Parekh
- Position: D
- Team: Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
- 2024-25 stats: 59 GP, 33 G, 69 A, 102 PTS
How Zayne Parekh failed to crack Canada’s 2025 World Juniors roster was and continues to be a mystery. Either way, the Flames have a truly elite prospect in the 2024 ninth-overall selection.
THAT'S 100 POINTS FOR ZAYNE PAREKH! 1ā£0ā£0ā£@NHLFlames 2024 #NHLDraft pick Zayne Parekh sniped one up high to tally his 100th point of the season and make history for @SpiritHockey!š¦ āØ#OHL | @CHLHockey | #Flames pic.twitter.com/yRsAoZy7GY

Parekh has somehow bested last season’s 99-point output. He holds a 14-point lead over Sam Dickinson for the OHL’s league lead in scoring by defencemen and will almost undoubtedly be playing for the Flames next season.
Matvei Gridin
- Position: LW/RW
- Team: Shawinigan Cataractes (QMJHL)
- 2024-25 stats: 54 GP, 34 G, 41 A, 75 PTS
The Flames reached a bit when selecting Matvei Gridin 28th overall in last year’s draft, and it appears to be for good reason. After lighting up the USHL in his draft year, the six-foot-one winger has transitioned seamlessly into the QMJHL.
Flames head coach Ryan Huska had high praise for the 19-year-old in training camp this past fall. He’s a very good NHL prospect who could be making an impact in the Flames lineup sooner than many realize.
Henry Mews
- Position: D
- Team: Ottawa 67’s/Sudbury Wolves (OHL)
- 2024-25 stats: 66 GP, 14 G, 68 A, 82 PTS
Steal of the draft? That’s what many in Calgary are beginning to suggest about Henry Mews, who the Flames snagged in the third round last year. The 19-year-old sits third amongst OHL defencemen in scoring. It’s been reported that he’s committed to Michigan State for next season, where he will look to continue his impressive development path.
Sam Honzek
- Position: LW
- Team: Calgary Wranglers (OHL)
- 2024-25 stats: 40 GP, 7 G, 11 A, 18 PTS
Sam Honzek had a training camp to remember for the Flames, lighting up the preseason and earning a spot on the opening night roster. Things have slowed down for him since, though it’s important to remember he’s just 20 years old. The future looks bright for the six-foot-four winger.

Aydar Suniev
- Position: LW
- Team: UMass Amherst (NCAA)
- 2024-25 stats: 33 GP, 18 G, 18 A, 36 PTS
Even with Yegor Sharangovich’s struggles this season, the Tyler Toffoli trade is still looking like a win for the Flames, thanks to the third-round pick they received in the deal. They selected Aydar Suniev with that pick, and the 20-year-old is excelling in his sophomore season with UMass Amherst. There’s a chance we’ll see him playing professional hockey in the AHL next season.
William Stromgren
- Position: LW/RW
- Team: Calgary Wranglers (AHL)
- 2024-25 stats: 58 GP, 12 G, 31 A, 43 PTS
It felt like William Stromgren would see some NHL action this season, though his struggles as of late appear to have hurt those chances. Still, the 21-year-old has impressed in his second season with the Wranglers, taking a huge step forward after a 27-point campaign in 2023-24.
Arseni Sergeev
- Position: G
- Team: Penn State (NCAA)
- 2024-25 stats: 30 GP, 2.66 GAA, .915 SV%
The Flames seem to have a knack for finding goalies in the seventh round. Just two years after taking Dustin Wolf, they grabbed Arseni Sergeev at 205th overall. The 22-year-old had a huge season for Penn State and, like Suniev, could be playing pro hockey in the near future.
Jacob Battaglia
- Position: LW/RW
- Team: Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)
- 2024-25 stats: 65 GP, 40 G, 48 A, 88 PTS
After scoring 31 goals and 65 points with the Kingston Frontenacs in his draft-eligible season, Jacob Battaglia has upped those totals to 40 goals and 88 points in two fewer games. He still has a ways to go in his development, but he is a player to keep an eye on going forward.

Luke Misa
- Position: C
- Team: Brampton Steelheads (OHL)
- 2024-25 stats: 65 GP, 34 G, 48 A, 82 PTS
The Flames lack centre prospects, which makes Luke Misa all the more intriguing. The 2024 fifth-round pick is undersized at 5-foot-10, 176 pounds, but possesses a ton of skill, as evidenced by his OHL stats.
Trevor Hoskin
- Position: C/RW
- Team: Niagara University (NCAA)
- 2024-25 stats: 36 GP, 12 G, 27 A, 39 PTS
The Flames chose to select Trevor Hoskin out of the OJHL in the fourth round in 2024, and so far, it’s looking like a solid selection. The 20-year-old put forth a strong freshman season for Niagara University, registering 12 goals while finishing tied for the team lead in scoring with 39 points.
Rory Kerins
- Position: C/LW
- Team: Calgary Wranglers (AHL)
- 2024-25 stats: 51 GP, 27 G, 21 A, 48 PTS
Rory Kerins turned many heads after an incredible start in the AHL this season and earned his first NHL call-up in January. He’s since been returned to the AHL and has seen his numbers cool off, but he’s definitely raised his stock within the Flames organization.
First shift. First NHL point.
Rory Kerins won't be forgetting this night. š¤©
