Calgary Flames prospect Henry Mews appears to be nearing the end of his OHL career.

The 19-year-old defenceman, who was selected 74th overall in the 2024 draft, has committed to the Michigan Wolverines of the NCAA for the 2025-26 season, as per NHL.com’s Mark Divver.

This is a move that is going to become much more of a normality going forward now that CHL players are able to play in the NCAA. This rule change was agreed upon by the two leagues this past August.

The decision would make plenty of sense for Mews, as it would allow him to compete against older and stronger players before making the jump to professional hockey. The six-foot-one blue liner doesn’t have much left to prove at the OHL level. His 80 points in a combined 63 games split between the Ottawa 67’s and Sudbury Wolves are third amongst all OHL defencemen this season.

Mews had an impressive draft-eligible season, recording 61 points in 65 games. Concerns over his defensive play resulted in him falling to the third round, though he told Daily Hive in an exclusive chat earlier in the year that he’s worked hard to improve that area of his game.

ā€œI think my overall game has improved a lot,ā€ Mews said. ā€œI’ve been able to round out my defensive play. I think the offensive numbers are picking up in big part because of the improvements I’ve made on the defensive end. [My] teammates have obviously helped with the numbers in a big way as well.ā€

Though it’s still very early into his development, Mews is being discussed in Calgary as one of the biggest steals of his draft class. He’s quickly turned into one of several great prospects the Flames have on the back end, along with names such as Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz.

Seeing how Mews fares against tougher competition next season will give the Flames organization and its fans a better idea as to how high-end of a prospect he really is.
