Big milestone reached on massive Calgary water infrastructure project
A major milestone has been reached on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main Replacement Project, with crews completing a key stage of work ahead of a major system connection planned for the fall.
The City of Calgary says that Stage A of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main Replacement Project is now complete. Stage A included approximately 3.7 kilometres of microtunnelling and installation of concrete carrier pipe.
The Bearspaw South Feeder Main is a critical part of Calgary’s drinking water system. The City is replacing the existing feeder main to improve the reliability of the city’s water supply.
“The completion of Stage A microtunneling is a significant step forward for the project,” said Darren Finney, manager of major projects.

“This complex work involved tunnelling beneath major infrastructure, minimizing impacts on the community. With the concrete carrier pipe now in place, we will continue installing the new steel feeder main, preparing for the critical system connection work planned for the fall.”

Stage A, which began in January, took place between the Shaganappi Pump Station and 73rd Street NW. Stage B of the project is still underway along 34th Avenue NW in Bowness, where crews have installed more than one kilometre of the new steel feeder main and completed 40 per cent of the planned installation.
To minimize disruptions, the City says construction is being completed in sections, and roadways, sidewalks and property access are being restored as work continues.
Looking ahead, work at the Shaganappi Pump Station is expected to begin in September as crews prepare to connect the new feeder main to Calgary’s existing water system.

The connection work is expected to begin in mid-October at various locations along the new feeder main. Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and indoor water conservation will be required during this work.
In November, crews are expected to begin commissioning the new feeder main, which will involve disinfecting the pipe, filling it with water and taking the existing feeder main out of service. The City does not anticipate water restrictions during this stage.

The Bearspaw South Feeder Main Replacement Project isn’t the only project in the works in Calgary right now. A new development with 200,000 sq. ft. of retail space is currently underway, and a huge thermal spa in downtown Calgary is set to open later this year.
