Major $180M expansion proposed for a west Calgary recreation centre
A major expansion could be coming to a popular Calgary recreation centre, with a $180-million plan that would bring tons of new amenities to the facility.
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, Westside Recreation announced plans for the expansion, which would add roughly 180,000 square feet of new aquatic, sport and community space.
The proposed expansion would include several new and improved aquatic amenities, including an expanded wave pool and tot pool, four new waterslides, an indoor spray park, two 25-metre pools, a cold plunge pool, an Arctic shower, as well as a steam room and sauna.

Outside of the aquatic facility, the recreation centre also plans to add a new fieldhouse, with space for indoor soccer, pickleball, basketball, volleyball, badminton and other sports. Outside of the fieldhouse, plans include improved outdoor fields and a new community playground.

While the facility already has an NHL-sized hockey rink, they plan to add another. The new ice would open more time for hockey, skating, sports, as well as community events.
The plans also include additional parking, with Westside’s parking lots set to be reconfigured and expanded. The changes would increase the number of parking spaces by more than 50 per cent, from 567 to approximately 870.
Westside Recreation
The expansion is part of the City of Calgary’s GamePLAN, a long-term strategy focused on improving and expanding the city’s public recreation facilities. Westside’s project has been identified as one of the strategy’s priority projects.
Pending funding, the project is expected to break ground in late 2027 or early 2028, taking around three years to complete. The aquatics expansion and fieldhouse will be built first, followed by the hockey arena expansion.
The centre, located at 2000 69th St. SW, says it welcomes over 1.1 million visitors per year and expects that number to rise as Calgary grows.
