A major change was just made to 'Global News Morning' in Calgary | Daily Hive

Calgary viewers of Global News Morning can expect a change to their early-morning news routine, with the broadcast cutting its 5 to 6 a.m. hour.

According to Corus, the parent company of Global News, the change took effect on Monday, Aug. 24, with the 5 to 6 a.m. news broadcast being replaced by The Morning Show.

The company said the change is part of a nationwide strategy to provide consistency with programming in other markets across the country.

“We remain committed to providing viewers with accessible, relevant and timely news content, while continuing to evolve our programming to best serve our audiences,” a Corus spokesperson said in a statement to Daily Hive.

Corus also confirmed that no Calgary staff were impacted as a result of the change, saying the changes were limited to programming.

Over in Edmonton, viewers are also seeing changes to Global News Morning. As of Monday, Aug. 24, the broadcast is also set to start an hour later.

In a social media post from Edmonton anchor Erin Chalmers, another change is set to take effect on Sept. 1 in Edmonton, when the technical side of the morning show moves from Edmonton to Toronto. Corus did not state in its response to Daily Hive whether the technical side of the morning show in Calgary will also be moving to Toronto in the future.

The changes come after 28 people at Global News studios in Alberta were laid off in mid-July, when parent company Corus Entertainment confirmed it was moving its Calgary and Edmonton news production to Toronto.

That round of layoffs also affected two positions in British Columbia, five in Winnipeg, two in Saskatoon, three in the Maritimes, and three in the Ontario region. At the same time, the company said it would also create new news-gathering roles.

Just one month after that announcement, Corus Entertainment cut more jobs last Thursday. The decision will impact positions at Global BC, Global National, and across its talk radio network, including 640 Toronto (CFIQ-AM).
