Vancouver Whitecaps fans planning massive 'Save The Caps' rally this weekend

“It doesn’t feel good.”

That’s what Vancouver Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster told Eoin O’Callaghen of The Guardian when discussing the team’s chances of solving their stadium conundrum.

It makes you wonder, is Vancouver really about to lose the best team in MLS?

Not if the fans have anything to do with it.

Attendance has been on the rise at BC Place, and the Whitecaps haven’t disappointed. They’ve won six of seven MLS home matches this season by a combined score of 18-3. That included a 3-0 win over Sporting Kansas City last Saturday, where they scored all three goals before the 30-minute mark.

The Whitecaps seemingly have more support than ever, but the effort to keep the team in Vancouver is coming from their most loyal fans.

The Vancouver Southsiders supporters group wants to make sure the Whitecaps stay right where they are.

Prior to last Saturday’s match, some of their supporters, including Wyatt Tierney, handed out “Save The Caps” papers to help spread the word.

“We go to start handing them out, and everybody wanted them,” Tierney told Daily Hive. “We were out of the cards in a minute and a half. I’m delighted and taken off guard by how much people want to help.”

That’s part of the rationale for ratcheting up the Save The Caps campaign this weekend.

The Vancouver Southsiders are planning a massive parade on Saturday ahead of the Whitecaps home game against the Colorado Rapids.

A source told Daily Hive that at least 1,000 people are expected to show up for the march, and that the number is expected to grow.

The march will start at the Southsiders’ usual meeting spot, Dublin Calling, on Granville Street. After that, fans attending will turn down Robson Street before reaching BC Place.

Anyone is welcome to attend the march, and supporters are encouraged to bring signs. Fans can also go to the Save The Caps website to download banners and printable materials to bring with them.

This is the last chance for some time if fans want to show their support prior to a Whitecaps game. After Saturday’s match, the Whitecaps won’t return to BC Place until after the FIFA World Cup.
