Thomas Müller calls on Vancouver Whitecaps fans to pack BC Place

The Vancouver Whitecaps are red-hot to start the season, topping the MLS table with a 6-1-0 record.

The highest-scoring team in MLS is looking to build off of back-to-back home wins ahead of Friday’s match against Sporting Kansas City at BC Place.

Whitecaps superstar Thomas Müller met with the media following training on Wednesday morning.

Müller’s wish

Average attendance at Whitecaps home matches is 24,025 so far this season, which ranks near the top of MLS.

We saw the two biggest crowds of the season roll into BC Place this month — 25,465 for Portland on April 4 and 25,460 for New York City FC on April 11. Friday will mark the 18th consecutive MLS home match with 20,000-plus in attendance.

While those numbers are obviously positive, Müller wants more.

“If I have a wish,” Müller told reporters. “I don’t know how we can get it done, but it would be nice if the lower bowl is in every home game full full. Not only almost full. I want to have the feeling that it’s packed.

“To be honest, it’s enjoyable. It’s enjoyable not only because I love this game but also because we are delivering week in, week out. Even in the games we are maybe not at our best, we are still grinding and trying to fight until the last second. I think you can see that in every game. It’s not about asking the people to go there, it’s more if I can wish for something, but we try our best to get the people in BC Place for a reason.”

Thoughts on Whitecaps’ future in Vancouver

The future of the Whitecaps in Vancouver remains uncertain. While the franchise simultaneously explores a long-term stadium solution and short-term bridge deals at BC Place, the club remains up for sale.

Müller has shown how much he enjoys Vancouver and being a part of the Whitecaps, so we wondered, has the 36-year-old been approached about becoming a part-owner in the future?

“Even if there would be something going on, I wouldn’t tell you here now,” Müller said with a smile. “You’ve never been in negotiations? Even if, I wouldn’t tell you.”

He did speak on the momentum the club has gained.

“The Whitecaps are very important for the city,” Müller said. “That’s my feeling about this situation. It’s not in our control, but I feel that we can provide something to get kind of a feeling going. I hope that the fans maybe also stand up a little bit more to avoid it.

“I don’t know what’s going on in the background, maybe they’re trying to figure it out and they want to show that they want us in the city. It will be nice if we could see it and feel it even a little bit more. We do our part, the rest is future. I don’t know what’s going on in the background.”

“I don’t really care about my numbers”

Müller has scored three MLS goals this season, including a brace in a 3-0 win over Toronto FC on Feb. 28. Two of his tallies have been from the penalty spot. Müller has featured in all seven MLS matches, with five shots on target in 489 minutes of play.

Whether it’s scoring, setting up a teammate, or building in transition, Müller wants to see Vancouver earn three points above anything else.

“I think as everyone you have moments you can do better,” Müller said. “Most of the games I had the feeling that I participated quite well and I provided the game what I can do. I want to get a little bit more often into finishing spots. One of my biggest strengths is finishing in the box.

“At the moment I’m more part of the higher build up. It’s also important to create a lot of chances. We are the best offence in the league. In general, there is nothing really to change or force to change, even if my numbers could be a little bit more shiny or more glamorous.

“I don’t really care about my numbers. I love to score goals. I love to make assists. I love it when my name is on scoring lists, but what is more important for me is that we play good as a team and we win.

“I think I can help the boys out there.”
