"Canada's hidden gem": Vancouverite can't stop raving about Calgary

A Vancouverite recently visited Calgary and couldn’t stop raving about the city, asking people for reasons why they shouldn’t make the move east.

In a post shared to Reddit this week, the Vancouverite listed several reasons why Calgary might be “Canada’s hidden gem.”

Included on the long list was the overall urban design of the city, like the old sandstone buildings, stunning river pathways, flat landscape and big sidewalks.

They also pointed out the amount of sun the city gets, which is in stark contrast to the cloudy, rainy weather the West Coast is used to having.

The lack of crime was also a noticeable difference that drove the poster to say, “This city reminds me of Vancouver 20-30 years ago.”

People in the comments were quick to point out some of the city’s more negative aspects, but many agreed Calgary is a nice place to live in.

The most common complaints focused on the poor transit system, rising housing costs, and the weather.

While many aren’t happy about the dry weather and -30°C temperatures in the winter time, there is something to be said about living in Canada’s sunniest city.

Mostly, it seems many locals would like to keep the “hidden” part of “hidden gem” the way it is.
