Everything you need to know about Vancouver's one-night English Bay fireworks show set for this Friday

Fireworks will return to the skies over Vancouver’s English Bay this Friday night, but spectators will have only one opportunity to catch the grand pyrotechnic display this summer.

The City of Vancouver’s “Summer Lights in English Bay” event will take place this Friday, July 31, 2026, offering a single night of fireworks in place of the traditional three-night Honda Celebration of Light international fireworks competition.

This event is being organized and funded by the municipal government following a directive by Vancouver City Council this past winter. The free event is intended to serve as a crucial stopgap for 2026, maintaining public interest and momentum while efforts continue to revive the full three-night fireworks competition in 2027. The 2026 Honda Celebration of Light was cancelled in late 2025, after organizers were unable to secure timely government and private-sector funding to cover its projected shortfall and rising costs.

Aside from the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, this marked the first cancellation of the annual Honda Celebration of Light in its more than three-decade history. Over that time, it became a beloved summertime tradition, B.C.’s largest free annual public event in terms of attendance, and a major economic contributor for Vancouver businesses.

This fireworks event will help kick off both the B.C. Day long weekend and Vancouver Pride weekend. The Vancouver Pride Parade and Davie Village festival will take place this Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026.

Look up at the skies over English Bay and enjoy the show

Although Summer Lights will feature far less pre-fireworks programming than the longstanding event — with no air show and no drone show — the main attraction of fireworks over the waters of English Bay promises to be just as spectacular.

The event is being produced by Vancouver-based BrandLive, which has organized the Honda Celebration of Light for the past decade and a half and recently played a leading role in delivering the FIFA Fan Festival at Hastings Park. The fireworks display is being designed and staged by Winnipeg-based Archangel Fireworks, which has overseen the pyrotechnic competition component of the Honda Celebration of Light for many years as a BrandLive contractor.

The fireworks will have the usual runtime of 25 minutes and begin at the traditional start time of precisely 10 p.m., launched from a barge positioned in the middle of English Bay.

This will be a pyromusical. The live simulcast of the fireworks will be made available on radio station Rock 101.

As with the Honda Celebration of Light, the fireworks will be best viewed from English Bay Beach, Sunset Beach Park, and the Stanley Park seawall, as well as from Vanier Park and Kitsilano Beach across the water.

Major crowds are expected. As this will be Vancouver’s only free public fireworks extravaganza of the summer, spectators are encouraged to arrive early at their preferred beach or park and secure a viewing spot. Those planning to watch from the beach should also note that a high tide peak of 4.5 metres is expected at 8:46 p.m.

As of the time of writing, the forecast calls for highly optimal weather conditions on Friday evening.

Food trucks will open at 3 p.m. along Beach Avenue next to English Bay Beach.

There will be a very small lineup of live music on the English Bay Bathhouse rooftop. DJ Remsta will start the evening at 6:30 p.m. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., the rooftop stage will feature performances by Carlotta Gurl, Eva Lasting, and Celestial Seasonings.

Road closures and expanded public transit service

Expect traffic delays and very limited parking throughout the Downtown Vancouver peninsula and Kitsilano areas.

Just like the Honda Celebration of Light, road closures in Downtown Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood — generally roughly west of Burrard Street and south of West Georgia Street — will begin at 5 p.m. The road closures are scheduled to end at about 11:30 p.m., although the timing could depend on how quickly crowds clear from the area.

TransLink will add extra service to accommodate the mass crowds, including pre-event shuttle buses from SkyTrain’s Burrard Station to the intersection of Denman Street and West Georgia Street between 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., and special post-event shuttle buses from the intersection of Bidwell Street and West Georgia Street to Burrard Station and Waterfront Station.

SkyTrain will operate every two to three minutes in the hours leading up to and after the fireworks. To ensure passenger safety, there will be modified access to the entrances at Burrard Station, Granville Station, and Waterfront Station. Bikes will not be permitted on SkyTrain after 10:30 p.m.

Due to the street closures, bus routes No. 5 Robson/Downtown, No. 6 Davie/Downtown, and No. 23 English Bay/Main Street-Science World Station will be temporarily rerouted.

SeaBus service will run every 10 minutes from 6:30 p.m. until 11 p.m., at which point sailings will depart every 15 minutes until the last sailing from Waterfront Station at 1:22 a.m.
