11 events celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the Vancouver Olympic Games

It’s been 10 years since Vancouver played host to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. It was the largest undertaking in the province since Expo ’86 and transformed the region with new housing, recreational and community facilities, lasting transportation infrastructure, and the experience of a lifetime for many locals.

Now, if you’re looking to relive your memories of Vancouver’s Winter Games, here are 11 events to help you do so.

Free curling at Hillcrest Centre

Give curling a try at the Vancouver Curling Club. Accredited coaches will be on site for lessons and the session will be followed by a mini-game to test out your new skills.

Illuminate Yaletown

To commemorate the Olympic Games, Illuminate Yaletown will include a number of tribute pieces, including an Olympic podium. Guests are also told to expect never-before-seen activations and virtual-reality experiences. Select restaurants and bars in the area will also be doing Olympic-themed cocktails for the occasion.

2010 Winter Games Pin Exchange 

Where you a pin fanatic during the 2010  games? Relive the pin collecting glory at the 2010 Winter Games Pin Exchange on February 15.

Where: Creekside Community Centre Gymnasium — 1 Athletes Way, Vancouver

2010 Blue Jacket Volunteer Celebration 

Who can forget the classic blue volunteer jackets that became a wardrobe staple of the 2010 games? If you were a volunteer who still has their blue jacket, wear it with pride at a celebration on February 16 and receive a free coffee and snack.

Train like an Olympian 

Haven’t worked out since the 2010 games? Now’s your chance to train –Olympian style. Take part in a 10 station, 10 round high-intensity workout that will most definitely have you breaking out into a sweat.

Wheelchair curling

All the fun of curling with zero risk of sliding — this take on the sport can be done both sitting or standing. Equipment will be provided and participation is free.

Wear Red Family Day Skates

Show off your Canadian pride and wear red and white during this family day skate taking place at three Vancouver rinks in celebration of 2010 games.

When: Monday, February 17, 2020
Where: Hillcrest Arena, Killarney Rink, Trout Lake Rink
Time: Hillcrest 9:30 am to 12:45 pm/ Killarney 10:15 am to 1:45 pm / Trout Lake 10: 45 am to 2 pm

Family Day Fun at the BC Sports Hall of Fame

Join in on a day of celebration to honour the Vancouver Olympic anniversary and get a photo with Olympic gold medalist Maëlle Ricker between 12 to 1 pm.

Train like a Paralympian

Your daily workout just got 10 times harder. Train like a Paralympian is an intense and challenging upper body workout that includes 10 stations and 10 rounds of a Paralympic Hockey-inspired workout. Pre-registration is required (participants must be above the age of 18).

10-year Vancouver 2010 Olympic Anniversary Festival 

Join in on the Vancouver 2010 Celebration Festival at Jack Poole Plaza on February 22. The day will be filled with activities including athlete meet and greets, sports demonstrations, main stage programming, and a ceremonial cauldron lighting and live musical performance.

As well, on the same day, a separate ticketed gala will be held inside the convention centre, featuring over 60 Olympians and Paralympians.

Richmond Oval 10-year Olympic Games anniversary

In 2010, the Richmond Olympic Oval was a host venue for 12 medal events at the Winter Games. From February 21 to 23, the oval will celebrate with public skating, an Olympic museum and sports simulators, a Canada vs. USA Women’s Para Ice Hockey Game, Speed Skating demonstrations, and a chance to meet-and-greet Olympic Athletes.

When: Friday, February 21 to Sunday, February 23, 2020
Time: Friday from 5 to 8 pm; Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm; Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm
Where: Richmond Olympic Oval — 6111 River Road, Richmond
