Busy Highway 1 entrance and exit closure could impact Vancouver drivers this weekend

Just when you think the busy season of construction and roadwork is in the rearview, another closure of a Highway 1 entrance and exit could impact Vancouver drivers for several days this weekend.
Drivers are warned that the northbound and southbound off-ramps (Exit 27) at East 1st Avenue will be closed from Friday, Oct. 10, until Tuesday, Oct. 14.
The on-ramps to eastbound and westbound Highway 1 from East 1st Avenue will also be closed for the same period of time over the Thanksgiving long weekend.
“Starting at 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, City of Vancouver crews will complete road improvements along East 1st Avenue between Rupert Street and Boundary Road,” said the Ministry of Transportation and Transit in a release.
“Drivers can detour through East Hastings Street to access Highway 1 and should plan additional travel time through the route. All ramps will reopen Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7 a.m.”

According to the City of Vancouver, the road closure is to facilitate repaving work that is part of a transportation safety upgrade project currently underway along the section of East 1st Avenue.
“East 1st Avenue, between Cassiar St and Boundary Road, will be closed while crews complete street repaving work,” said the City of Vancouver to Daily Hive Urbanized.
“Upgrades include installation of a new centre median and pedestrian crosswalk improvements. Upgrades are anticipated to be complete by the end of the year.”
Motorists and commuters are asked to obey signage in the road closure area and allow themselves extra time to reach their destinations.

The off-ramp in the area was shut down several times during the summer to allow City of Vancouver crews to carry out sewer upgrade work along East 1st Avenue.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit also announced a three-week closure in August for the City’s street upgrades.
Updates on road closures and ongoing construction projects are available on the City’s website.
