Snow on the way? Here's what's to expect for Vancouver's February forecast

As Metro Vancouver braces for its first blast of cold weather this week with snow flurries in the forecast, could there be more of this frigid weather in store for February?

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Metro Vancouver will experience the first snow flurries of the year sometime this week. This comes after temperatures dropped below zero last week as a wave of Arctic air hit the region.

Now that Vancouver will finally experience its first real taste of (a West Coast) winter, will the freezing conditions and a proper dump of snow be on the way come February?

According to ECCC meteorologist Derek Lee, that’s likely not going to happen.

“Moving into February, I’m seeing some below-normal temperature signals for parts of BC, especially in the northern and central interior, but I don’t really see a consistent signal out on the coast,” said Lee.

However, he noted that things can quickly change, but that depends on whether cold air will be pushed down into the Metro Vancouver region.

“Because the cold air is possibly lingering around in the interior of the province, it can come down as far as the coast sometimes. But you know, right now, the models are not really hinting at, you know, a solid cold signal for where we live right now in the Lower Mainland.”

While there might not be a snowstorm arriving in Vancouver soon, be sure to bundle up this week, as the cold is here to stay for at least a few more days.
