While Metro Vancouver has seen a pretty meh winter without any snow or actual frosty weather so far, it might be time to layer up to combat freezing temperatures thanks to an Arctic airmass headed this way.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has not issued an official warning yet. However, it is issuing a note to readers on its seven-day forecast page that we could see some pretty cold weather by the time this weekend rolls around.
The Arctic airmass that ECCC is warning the public about could bring below-seasonal temperatures to the region. It adds an additional warning that the weather could impact vulnerable populations and agricultural vegetation.

ECCC’s forecast has been changing quite frequently. While we initially reported that a full week of sun was on its way to Metro Vancouver, some rain has entered the forecast, along with temperatures as low as -5˚C.

ECCC
ECCC says the Arctic airmass could impact the region between January 17 and January 22.
In addition to the freezing temperatures, Vancouver could also be in store for some pretty strong winds. On Thursday, ECCC says winds could gust up to 60 km/h near the Strait of Georgia in the late morning.
ECCC isn’t the only one warning the public about the cold. In response to an extreme weather alert, the City of Vancouver is opening additional shelter spaces.
Due to an extreme weather alert with temperatures at or below 0°C, additional shelter spaces will be open tonight through Thursday, Jan. 16 ⬇️
