Us? We just call them dive bars.

Places where dress codes are non-existent, new friends are more than welcome, and drinks are typically served in pitchers with a healthy side of grease and shenanigans.

At The Cambie beer pong is a celebrated sport, and brews, fries, and burgers are in constant supply. Judging from the long line that curls around the bar every Friday and Saturday night, this Gastown haunt is a crowd favourite even when it’s not Tuesday ‘Cambie Pong’, Wednesday Wing Night, or Thirsty Thursday.

This spot has and open mic night on Wednesdays and karaoke on Tuesdays and Thursdays along with cheap food, a pinball room, and free WiFi (in case you need to practice your karaoke lyrics before your stage call).

3. Ivanhoe Pub

Aside from cold beer, the Ivanhoe serves all the main food groups: burgers, fries
steaks, lasagne, spaghetti, chicken, salads, soups, wings, and last but not least, nachos. With karaoke Wednesdays, pool tournament Thursdays, and live music most Fridays to Sundays, what more could you want from a local bar?

4. Brickhouse Late Nite Bistro & Bar

5. The West Hotel Pub

This hotel and bar is location in Chinatown and if you’re in the area, it’s a solid place to grab a cheap drink. Built in 1913, The West Hotel Pub has a ton of history and it always attracts an eclectic crowd, so people watching is just as fun as drinking the beer.

6. Funky Winker Beans

Now try saying that ten times fast. This self-proclaimed hardcore bar offers live punk and metal on Fridays and Saturdays as well as ‘The Evil Bastard Karaoke Experience’ from Sunday to Thursday starting at 9 pm. This place has “cheap-ass beer and drink specials everyday” so it’s pretty much a go-to dive.

7. Grand Union Hotel Pub

This country music pub has some serious charm. Even from the outside, it looks like the type of place where you’d get in some trouble. ‘Vancouver’s Favourite Country Club’ has beers, WiFi, and of course, great music by artists like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.
