10-year Vancouver Olympic anniversary festival at Jack Poole Plaza this Saturday

Feb 21 2020, 4:37 pm

Reignite the Olympic spirit of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games this Saturday, February 22.

The Canadian Olympic Committee’s official Vancouver 2010 10th Anniversary Celebration Festival will take over Jack Poole Plaza in downtown Vancouver, featuring live music, Olympic and Paralympic athlete meet and greets, sport demonstrations, main stage programming, face painting, and food trucks.

This is a free fan festival and all revellers are encouraged to wear their 2010 Olympic apparel. Relive the Games by bringing out a pair of the iconic Red Olympic Mittens, or even purchase a limited edition 2010 anniversary Black Olympic Mittens benefiting Canadian athletes.

The festival programming kicks off at 11 am and concludes at 6 pm, culminating at 5:30 pm with a live musical performance by three-time JUNO Award-winning artist Lights and the relighting of the Olympic Cauldron.

Inside Vancouver Convention Centre during the evening, the COC is holding a separate, private ticketed gala that will include the attendance of over 60 Olympians and Paralympians.

Separately, Richmond Olympic Oval is also hosting weekend-long free anniversary activities and events.

Supported by VANOC and the COCā€™s years-long Own the Podium Program, Canadian athletes at Vancouver 2010 won a total of 26 medals, including 14 gold medals, seven silver medals, and five bronze medals.

The gold medal haul set a historic record, as it was the most any nation had ever received at the Winter Olympics. These Games also marked the first time Canada won an Olympic gold medal on home soil, which was earned by freestyle skier Alex Bilodeau at Cypress Mountain.

A decade later, Vancouver 2010 is generally regarded locally and internationally as a highly successful Olympics that brought positive post-Games legacies to BC.

The unique Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic logos and branding have been reactivated for the first time in years to help promote the festival and gala.

The 21st Olympic Winter Games were held between February 12 and 28 of 2010.

The anniversary also coincides with a new push by former VANOC officials to launch a potential bid for the Vancouver 2030 Winter Games.
