United Kingdom lights up the night with spectacular Honda Celebration of Light fireworks (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

A longtime, cherished summer tradition in Vancouver continued on Wednesday at English Bay with this year’s second of three Honda Celebration of Light fireworks shows.

Large shells, synchronized to a wide variety of predominantly British music, ripped over the night skies as pyrotechnics company Jubilee Fireworks, representing the United Kingdom, delivered its theme of ‘Kiss The Sky’.

But the crowds were smaller than the last show on Saturday, July 29 by Japan, which saw 250,000 fireworks fans fill the beaches and viewing points.

Last night, approximately 200,000 people hunkered down at the beaches and parks in and around English Bay, according to Vancouver Police estimates.

This lower attendance was expected, as the weekday shows typically draws smaller crowds, and the wildfire smog likely also played a role and deterred people from the show.

As has been the case consistently in recent years, police say the crowd was well-behaved. There were only 30 liquor pour outs, two disturbance arrests, and one marijuana seizure.

Significantly larger crowds are expected for the final performance on Saturday, August 5, when Canada stages its show. The last show always falls on the same weekend as the BC Day long weekend, and shows performed by a team representing Canada historically see a higher attendance at the Celebration of Light.
