Spanish grocery store and sandwich shop to open in Vancouver

A little bit of Spain is coming to Vancouver in the form of a grocery store and bocadillo (sandwich) shop called Ultramarinos Pepe.

The new store coming to South Cambie explains its concept simply with one sentence: “Eat what you can buy, buy what you can eat.”

“In Spain, an ultramarinos is a small neighbourhood shop filled with everyday essentials stacked on high shelves: conservas, olives, bread, sweets, charcuterie, and all the simple things people pick up on their daily routine. But an ultramarinos is more than a store,” wrote Ultramarinos Pepe.

“Ultramarinos Pepe is also a small bocadillo shop, the kind where everything begins with the products on the shelves,” explained the store. “The olive oil you see, the chorizo, the jamón, the conservas, and the bread we bring in daily are all the same ingredients used in every bocadillo.”

That means that you can enjoy a sandwich here, and then buy the exact same ingredients to take home with you.

As for what guests can expect the store to carry, Ultramarinos Pepes said it will offer a selection of Spanish essentials like jamón ibérico, cured cheese, conservas (preserves), olive oils, and pantry staples.

“These are everyday products in Spain, brought here in a way that feels simple, familiar, and easy to explore. It is Spain next door in the most literal way,” added the store.

Located at 698 W 16th Ave., Vancouver, an opening date for Ultramarinos Pepe is expected to be shared soon.
