Jason Kenney’s UCP projected to win majority government in Alberta

Jason Kenney will be the next premier of Alberta.

Following months of campaigning, six days of voting, and millions of ballots cast throughout the province, the election has been called in the United Conservative Party’s favour.

New Democratic Party leader and incumbent premier Rachel Notley will relinquish her premiership to Kenney after four years of a majority government that, when it was initially elected back in 2015, brought an end to 44 years of Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta (PC) leadership.

The UCP was created in 2017 after a merger between the PCs and the Wildrose Party following a defeat against Notley’s NDP that saw all three parties take a significant portion of the vote.

Jason Kenney and the UCP are headed towards a decisive win tonight with a majority of seats, taking control of the Alberta Legislative Assembly for what will likely be the next four years.

The race was called less than one hour after votes started coming in, with projections showing the UCP coming away with at least 60 seats throughout the province, while the NDP is projecting at least 24 seats.

Final numbers are still to come once all ballots are counted.
