There’s a gourmet ice cream shop and cafe serving up treats in the former space of Tangram, located at 2729 Arbutus Street.
Sweet Barrel Creamery and Coffee Roaster is a rebranded version of Tangram, a concept that announced it would no longer be operating at its Kitsilano location.
Tangram urged followers to stay tuned for exciting updates, but former co-owner/partner Michael Wong resurrected his own shop in the space under a new name, and that’s when Sweet Barrel was born.
Wong says the new name “suits what we are about,” as the ‘Sweet’ describes the ice cream, and ‘Barrel’ relates to the drum that tumbles coffee beans during roasting.
While the sweet spot still offers gourmet ice cream (hand churned in-house) new offerings from Sweet Barrel include crêpes which can be paired with scoops from the freezer.
Other offerings up for order at Sweet Barrel include Belgian-style waffles, croissants, and a selection rotating selection of pastries from Remi Ho.

Owner Michael Wong is a seasoned barista and told Daily Hive that with the rebrand, he wants Sweet Barrel “to be known for our freshly on-site roasted coffee.”
Wong says Sweet Barrel offers several brewing methods for coffee lovers, including espresso-based, V60 hand pour over, batch brewed, and siphon brewed beverages.
Wong says he hopes the new name will relate with more with his customers, be sure to stop by and enjoy an offering from the newly-rebranded neighbourhood gem.
