
Surrey residents woke up on Thursday to a mysterious sight in the sky, and the debate over what could be causing the stunning phenomenon continues.
“What is happening in the skies over in Cloverdale this morning?” Melissa Knight shared on the Surrey BC Community Facebook group.
She also posted several images of colourful streaks in the dark morning haze.

“It’s the aliens coming to get the sheep,” wrote one person.
“Looks like someone is having a party and has spotlights up and running,” commented another.

Multiple people posited that the lights were caused by light pollution caused by cannabis greenhouses, which has been seen recently in Metro Vancouver.
“Green houses off the 99 by 44th Ave. Drove past them this morning at 6 am,” commented a Surrey resident.

A popular theory among locals is that the colours in the sky are caused by light pillars, an optical phenomenon caused when light is refracted by ice crystals. According to AccuWeather, these lights tend to take on the colour of the light source.
“That’s a thing that happens in other places but I’ve never heard of it here,” said one commenter, though another added, “Been seeing lots of weird stuff as well.”
