New design renderings of the eight stations on Surrey-Langley SkyTrain

Jun 21 2024, 12:20 am

The future Surrey-Langley SkyTrain continues to advance, with the Government of British Columbia now sharing brand new artistic renderings of the eight new elevated stations on this 16-km-long extension of the Expo Line along Fraser Highway between the existing King George Station and Langley City Centre.

The latest visuals released are for a new public consultation this month towards finalizing the designs of the new stations, which build on the previous highly preliminary concepts created by TransLink.

The new renderings show refined architectural designs of the station structure in greater detail, as well as different visual perspectives and the circulation layout of how passengers are expected to move through the station in their egress and ingress.

As can be expected, the designs extensively feature glass walls and wood for the roof structures to provide a warm interior aesthetic.

At each station, all levels will be accessible by staircase and elevator, as well as both up and down escalators. Apart from the Expo Line’s new easternmost terminus station, Langley City Centre Station, which will have centre platforms, seven of the stations will be designed with side platforms.

Except for Green Timbers Station, seven of the stations will feature a secure bike parkade space and commercial retail space, which provides a revenue-generating opportunity, a passenger amenity for convenient access to shops, services and/or food and beverage retail, and adds a manned presence to the station — supporting optimal Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Principles (CPTED). All of these retail units are accessible before the fare gates, which will better support the long-term success of the businesses.

Such extra features at Green Timbers Stations are limited in space due to the station’s location on the median of Fraser Highway through Green Timbers Urban Forest. This station’s configuration is particularly similar to Brentwood Town Centre Station.

152 Street Station carries the major added feature of a pedestrian overpass across 152 Street, providing a seamless foot connection between the station at the northwest corner of the intersection and the northeast corner. This effectively provides the station with a secondary entrance.

Three stations — Bakerview-166 Street, Willowbrook, and Langley City Centre — will include major bus exchanges, with the bus exchange for Langley City Centre being the largest.

There will be a public art opportunity at each of the eight stations, with the installation either being a general/public art piece or an Indigenous cultural recognition public art piece. The artist budget for each public art piece is $250,000, with a total of $2 million for the SkyTrain extension’s entire public art program.

Overall, these elevated station designs are highly consistent with the calibre and features of the Millennium Line’s Evergreen Extension stations and the Canada Line’s new Capstan Station.

This new public consultation on the station designs is being conducted following the provincial government’s selection in April 2024 of the consortium that will design and build all of the new stations, bus exchanges, adjacent public plazas, and pedestrian and cycling pathways. The consortium, named South Fraser Station Partners, is comprised of Aecon Constructors, Acciona Infrastructure Canada, Pomerleau BC, and AECOM Canada.

The consortium also entails the subcontractors of two architectural firms experienced in rapid transit station design — Francl Architecture and Perkins&Will. Both architectural firms were previously involved with the station designs of the Evergreen Extension and the Canada Line.

Here is a complete rundown of the new visuals showing the latest detailed conceptual designs and layouts of the stations:

An online survey on these station design concepts is open through June 30, 2024.

Input gathered from this public consultation will be used to create finalized station designs, which will undergo a final round of public consultation in Fall 2024. At that later juncture, additional details on landscaping and public art will be included.

Major construction work on the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension will begin later in 2024 for completion and opening in late 2028 — about a year after the Millennium Line’s Broadway Extension reaches Arbutus, which will see a delayed completion and opening in Fall 2027.

In addition to selecting the consortium for the station design and construction contract, the provincial government earlier this spring also selected the two consortiums that will fulfill the contract for the elevated guideway and the contract for the railway, electrical, and automatic train control systems. The entire project carries a total cost of $4 billion.

The travel time between King George Station and 203 Street Station will be about 22 minutes, while the travel time between Waterfront Station and 203 Street Station will be about 62 minutes.

Upon opening in 2028, trains will run every six minutes during peak hours and 10 minutes during mid-day.

Based on previous ridership modelling performed in 2022, 152 Street, Willowbrook, and Langley City Centre stations are expected to be the busiest stations, but this could change as a result of the provincial government’s various 2023 legislation relating to housing, especially the transit-oriented development legislation, coupled with the supporting area densification plans of the City of Surrey, City of Langley, and Township of Langley.
