Closures of major Surrey highway to last months for SkyTrain construction
Construction on the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension rolls on this summer, and drivers and commuters are being warned of major traffic disruptions.
The Government of B.C. announced that a section of Fraser Highway, between 140th Street and 96th Avenue, will be fully closed through Monday, Sept. 7, 2026.
The closures are to support guideway work over the busy roadway, including delivery and lifting of large components.

“This work requires a series of traffic pattern changes, affecting vehicle and pathway access,” said Surrey Langley SkyTrain Project in a public notice.
“Overnight work will occur throughout this timeframe. Cranes and equipment will be in operation; increases in noise are expected.”

Traffic pattern changes for the same section of the Fraser Highway will remain in effect for several months throughout the fall
From Sept. 7 through to Dec. 20, overnight road closure between 140th Street and 96th Avenue will occur from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
An alternate route of 96th Avenue has been identified during the current phase of construction.
Drivers and commuters are also warned that they can expect delays while in the area.

If all goes as planned, elevated guideway construction will reach completion in mid-2027, and station construction and related work will finish in late 2028. Railway tracks and electrical and automated train control systems installation began in Spring 2026 and will end in late 2028. Full system testing and commissioning will begin in late 2026 in preparation for the late 2029 opening.
Along the elongated Expo Line, a one-train ride between Langley City Centre Station and Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver will be 65 minutes, while the trip between Langley City Centre Station and King George Station will be 22 minutes.

The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension of the Expo Line has prompted the City of Surrey to create the Clayton Corridor Plan, which would introduce high-density, transit-oriented development to an area that is currently largely suburban and semi-rural — especially for the areas north of Fraser Highway.
The area plan is expected to be finalized by Surrey City Council in 2027.
Members of the public also had an opportunity to leave a permanent — though eventually hidden — mark on the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project last month.
Visitors used markers to sign panels that will later be placed inside a concrete segment forming part of the future concrete guideway of the Expo Line extension.
Once this precast concrete segment is installed, the signatures will no longer be visible to the public. The initiative is similar to a time capsule, preserving a record of the community’s involvement during the SkyTrain extension’s construction.
