Public invited to sign 'time capsule' guideway segment for Surrey-Langley SkyTrain
Members of the public will have an opportunity to leave a permanent — though eventually hidden — mark on the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project this weekend.
A public signing event will be held on Saturday, July 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hillcrest Village Shopping Centre, located at 18710 Fraser Highway in Surrey.
This signing event is located roughly midway between the project’s future stations of Hillcrest-184 and Clayton.

Visitors will be invited to use markers to sign panels that will later be placed inside a concrete segment forming part of the future concrete guideway of the Expo Line extension. Markers will be provided at the event.
Once this pre-cast concrete segment is installed, the signatures will no longer be visible to the public. The initiative is similar to a time capsule, preserving a record of the community’s involvement during the SkyTrain extension’s construction.
“The public will sign panels that will be placed inside the segment,” wrote the project team in response to a question on social media. “Once the segment is installed, the signed panels won’t be visible, making it similar to a time capsule that captures this moment in the project’s history.”
The project team added that it is exploring ways to mark the completed segment so that its location can be easily identified in the future.
These signed panels will be placed inside the hollow space of the pre-cast concrete segment, before it is lifted into place.

The extension’s entire 16-km-long elevated guideway along Fraser Highway from the existing King George Station to the future Langley City Centre Station will have more than 4,400 pre-cast concrete segments, which are being manufactured at a temporary plant located at Campbell Heights.
Four specialized gantry cranes are currently installing the precast concrete segments. Steel tendons are threaded through each group of segments and pulled tight to lock them together into a single guideway span, while high-strength epoxy is applied along the adjoining edges.
When complete, the gantry crane slides over to build the next section of guideway between two concrete columns.

As of early May 2026, over 30 per cent or about five km of the elevated guideway has already reached completion, and 75 per cent of the columns have been built. Construction is also well underway on all eight new elevated stations.
With a significant portion of the elevated guideway built, trackwork began in late April 2026 with the start of the installation process for the running rails.
This extension of the Expo Line is scheduled to reach completion and open in late 2029. Major construction work first began in November 2024.
