Many residents who live south of the Fraser have been eagerly awaiting the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension, and today a major milestone has been reached.

Today, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation shared that construction has now begun on all eight stations along the 16 km extension.

“Station construction is underway at all eight stations along the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension, marking a major project milestone and moving the region closer to better, more connected transit for communities south of the Fraser River,” the ministry shared.

Late last month, Daily Hive Urbanized shared that over 25 per cent of the elevated guideway was complete. Now, over 30 per cent of the elevated guideway is complete across the corridor.

The B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit has also doubled down on the expected launch date of the extension, suggesting the extension could enter operation in late 2029.

Track work is now beginning, which includes the installation of rail, marking the beginning of the next phase of the project.

“Everyone needs to get to school, work or appointments, and all the better if commutes go quickly with a minimum of stress,” Premier David Eby shared in a news release.

“This new extension links the growing region south of the Fraser with the rest of Metro Vancouver, making commuting faster and easier, while relieving traffic congestion. With all eight new SkyTrain stations now under construction, we are closer to riders moving from Langley City Centre to downtown Vancouver in a little over an hour.”

The extension is being built thanks to funding from both the federal and provincial governments.

What it’ll mean for commuters when the project is complete is that you’ll be able to get from King George Station on the Expo Line all the way to Langley City Centre. One of the stops along the way will be the brand new Willowbrook Station, adjacent to Willowbrook Shopping Centre.

“As construction begins on Willowbrook Station, we’re moving closer to a transit system that better connects people, communities, and opportunities across the region,” said Randeep Sarai, federal secretary of state (International Development) and MP for Surrey Centre.

“The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension will make it easier for residents to get where they need to go by reducing service gaps, shortening commute times and expanding public transportation across Metro Vancouver for years to come,” Sarai added.
