A 52-year-old Surrey resident has been charged with assault, after allegedly attacking a teen on November 16.

According to local RCMP, the incident took place in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood, just before noon. An 18-year-old boy, who had recently immigrated from Syria, told police he was elbowed in the face by the suspect “for no apparent reason.”

The victim received minor injuries as a result.

“A simple assault can have a profound impact on a new person to the country,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann, after the incident.

On Thursday, police announced they have arrested and charged Marc Nijjer with one count of assault causing bodily harm.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on March 8.

Schumann also thanked the public for their help in identifying the suspect and helping the investigation move forward.

Sometimes, he said, “that little bit of information is all that’s needed to solve a crime.”
