While East Vancouver’s iconic entertainment venue, The Rio Theatre has received love from some high-profile people as of late (after it surfaced that the building was for sale and could be redeveloped), an event taking place there this evening has people talking even more.
The event, known as the Deadpool Double Bill, goes down tonight at 7 pm, with doors opening at 6 pm.
And while management at the Rio is staying tight-lipped about whether or not certain special guests will be in attendance – namely, Ryan Reynolds – there have been various hints dropped that it might happen.
“Dreams really do come true!” the Rio said on Facebook.
The Rio then goes on to say the event will be “unlike anything Vancouver has ever experienced.”
When asked whether she had any further details to offer on tonight’s event, Rio Theatre operator Corinne Lea told Daily Hive “the red carpet starts at 5:30.”
Of course, it’s no secret that Vancouver native Reynolds stars as the main character in Deadpool, and there have been whisperings that the actor himself might make an appearance (although this has yet to be officially confirmed).
Still, the Rio’s Facebook page now features a photo of Deadpool, and a caption that reads “we get by with a little help from our friends.”
Earlier this year, Reynolds also tweeted his support for The Rio.

The complimentary event is presented in association with the BC Film and Television Industry and the City of Vancouver as a generous showing of their thanks and appreciation to the community, according to the event description.
In addition, “Mayor Gregor Robertson is set to proclaim ‘#SavetheRio’ week! And there will be a few surprises, special guests, and more… (As always, costumes welcome – and encouraged! Show us what you’ve got, kid).”
Admission is 19-plus, and people are being advised that the general admission ticket does NOT guarantee entry. “If you show up at 7:00 pm we can not guarantee you’ll get a seat,” the Rio said. “We expect this to be a very busy event, we encourage all ticket holders to come early to get a great seat.”
As of Monday afternoon, complimentary tickets for this event are no longer available, but limited “rush seating” will be available at the door.
