Popina Cantina set to open on Granville Island in August
Granville Island is about to get a new destination for tacos and beyond next month, as Popina Cantina is slated to open in the Net Loft in early August.
The new culinary destination is brought to us by the same all-star chefs behind Popina, which opened on the Northwest side of the Granville Island Public Market in Summer 2018.
The taco eatery will take over the space where Popina co-owner Chef Angus An’s Sen Pad Thai used to operate before moving into the the public market in 2018.
One of Popina Cantina’s co-owners, Robert Belcham, told Daily Hive over the phone that folks can look forward to some seriously delicious things from this new concept.
Popina Cantina will have an ever-changing menu of street tacos, but with a unique twist. Belcham said that patrons can expect Asian and Persian influences, among other inspirations, to be in store for them upon opening.

In addition to lunch and dinner, Popina Cantina will serve up Mexican-inspired breakfast eats such as breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros.
We’re told the selection of tacos will be small but mighty, and will feature a variety of proteins including fish, beef, and pork alongside veggie options as well.
Folks will also be delighted to find Popina’s popular Puffcream dessert (a picture-perfect soft serve cream puff) on the menu at the new cantina. Belcham says Puffcream flavours in the Net Loft will vary from bestsellers to new, Mexican-influenced creations.
Beverages such as Mexican sodas, affogatos, and espresso-style coffees will also be up for order here.

While Popina Cantina inside the Net Loft will not be licensed, its OG sister spot is booze-friendly and it’s just steps away.
Popina offers a range of local wine and beer, and cantina customers can feel free to grab their grub inside the Net Loft and then head out to get a beer and dine on the waterfront patio.
Once it’s up and operating, Popina Cantina will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We’ll keep you posted on an exact opening date — stay tuned!
