81 suggested names for Seattle's new NHL team

It’s the news hockey fans around North America are waiting for: Just what is Seattle’s new NHL team going to be named?

The plan was to have it announced by now, but the global pandemic has delayed things. Given the expansion team won’t hit the ice until the 2021-22 season, they’ve got some time to wait for the appropriate moment for the unveiling.

NHL Seattle reportedly had a name picked out in January, but a sassy reply from the team’s official Twitter account put some doubt back into people’s minds.

“Kraken” was reportedly the name decided on, though odds released afterwards on SportsBettingDime.com put “Sockeyes” in the lead.

Kraken and Sockeyes were two of the names the Seattle ownership group was thought to be considering when they registered 38 website domain names representing 13 different team names back in January 2018.

These were the odds-on favourites, as of last year:

  • Sockeyes -200
  • Totems +450
  • Emeralds +550
  • Rainiers +900
  • Renegades +2000
  • Kraken +2500
  • Seals +2500
  • Sea Lions +2500
  • Evergreens +3500
  • Firebirds +3500
  • Cougars +3500
  • Eagles +3500
  • Whales +3500

Undeterred, fans have continued to come up with creative names, and talented graphic artists have designed logo and jersey concepts, with my latest favourite being the “Seattle Murder Hornets.”
