A 2-km-long stretch of Front Street in New Westminster will be closed to vehicles over summer weekends through Labour Day weekend for the public to use for cycling and walking.
The weekend vehicle closure of this trucking route spans from Begbie Street in downtown New Westminster to East Columbia Street in Sapperton Landing, between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm.

The municipal government says the changes allow the public to have more space to get around while practicing physical distancing, and it is made possible by the route traditionally seeing lower volumes over weekends and during the summer. Truck and other vehicle traffic will be detoured to alternate routes.
Vehicle access to Front Street Frontage Road will remain open to main vehicle access to Front Street businesses.
The City of New Westminster is inviting businesses and the public to reach out to the municipal government to discuss ideas for events that could take place along this closed street over summer weekends.
Under the city’s “Save Space to Move” program, the city has made a number of road lane closures on strategic routes to enhance public spaces for cyclists and pedestrians.
