
Witnesses are being urged to come forward after a man was left seriously injured while trying to stop a fight near a busy New West market.
According to the New Westminster Police Department, a call to 911 reported that a group of five people were beating a man near River Market, which is right across the street from New West SkyTrain Station.
“Police arrived to the pedestrian overpass at the bottom of 8th Street at approximately 9 p.m. and found a man with serious but non-life-threatening injuries,” the department said in a release.
Police provided some aid on the scene before the victim was transported to a local hospital.

Once at the scene, New West police officers were informed by witnesses that they had noticed the man had tried to intervene after he had witnessed a group of five people, including three men and two women, beating someone.
“Witnesses shared that when the man came to the aid of the victim, the group turned on him. The suspects and the additional victim could not be located,” New West police said.
“We understand the other person who was attacked may be shaken and hesitant to come forward,” New West Police Sergeant Andrew Leaver said in a statement.
“We want to hear from you. Your perspective is an important part of this investigation, and we want to make sure you’re safe.”
New West residents are being warned to expect an increased police presence in the area as officers canvas the area for CCTV footage and interview witnesses.
Police are looking for anyone who might have dash cam footage from the area of Columbia Street and 8th Street between 8:30 and 9 p.m. on Oct. 30.
“Anyone who witnessed these incidents and hasn’t yet spoken to police about what they saw are asked to contact investigators at 604-525-5411.”
