The B.C. Highway Patrol (BCHP) says that a teen has some explaining to do after travelling at dangerous speeds in his dad’s Honda.
A 17-year-old got a ride home from his mom after he was caught speeding on Highway 1 in rainy weather.
The incident happened on Oct. 19 at 7:45 a.m. on Highway 1 in Abbotsford near Clearbrook Road.
A BCHP officer spotted a grey Honda sedan passing other cars at “high velocity.”
According to a BCHP officer’s laser reader, the teenager was driving at a speed of 178 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. To make matters worse, the ‘N’ driver only got his licence in January 2025.
He also violated his N privileges as he was travelling with two passengers who were not family members.
BCHP noted some of the penalties and potential consequences for the teen’s actions.
For travelling at excessive speeds over 60 km/h above the limit, the B.C. teen was hit with a $483 fine. For his passenger infraction, it’s a $109 fine. Failure to display his ‘N’ resulted in another fine of $109. On top of those monetary penalties, the family Honda faces a seven-day impound at his dad’s expense, and he also faces three years of high-risk premiums and extra insurance premiums for his dad.
That’s not all.
“As a Novice driver, the Abbotsford teen will likely be subject to a suspension of his licence by the BC Superintendent of Motor Vehicles,” BCHP said.
“This young driver will remember the expensive and uncomfortable consequences of his first traffic stop for a long time,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BCHP in a statement.
“But considering the wet roads and high speed, he and his passengers could have ended much worse.”
