Vancouver restaurant fed up with crime, including 'Spider-Man' break-in

Since the beginning of the year, a restaurant in the Vancouver neighbourhood of Yaletown has had to deal with 25 alleged incidents of crime.

That’s on top of another 10 alleged incidents that occurred at another location of the establishment.

Fab Foz shared some information with Daily Hive about what he’s had to deal with at the Social Corner on the corner of Homer and Smithe streets, including video footage he had previously shared on social media.

“Even with all the security, we’ve had four issues in the span of two months. These happen mostly at night, but petty theft happens during the day,” Foz said.

One of those incidents happened in the early morning hours at 6:57 a.m. with someone breaking into the restaurant, who the footage has captioned as Spider-Man (at the 00:05 mark).

The incidents are impacting the sense of safety and morale at his establishments.

“A lot of the female staff get spooked by these incidents; it creates a sense of unease. In the most recent incident, the individual had a knife in their hand.”

Foz hasn’t been reporting the incidents to the police and has explained why.

“I’ve stopped reporting it to the police, because it takes forever to do a report, that’s a cost. Three or four hours of lost time, that’s like $2,000 of my time. Plus, on top of that, those people are caught and they are back out on the street. What’s the point? The government, whether provincial or federal, doesn’t seem to care about business people, and that’s why I’m taking my business elsewhere. Canada is not a serious country.”

The Government of Canada recently announced some changes to laws to hopefully address Foz’s concern, after much public outcry about repeat offenders in cities like Vancouver.

BC Attorney General responded to the changes, and made it sound like she thinks the changes will make our streets safer.

The hit that Foz is taking isn’t just regarding safety; he’s also taking a big financial hit.

“In total, I’ve lost over $100,000, and at this point, I don’t even go to report to insurance as the premiums are already ridiculous, and with each incident, this will only make the premiums go higher. Plus, each incident there’s always a deductible, and everything takes longer to repair under insurance. This doesn’t include opportunity cost,” he said.

Foz’s proposed solution is something we’ve heard from many of our readers and comments on social media.

“Keep the individuals either behind bars or get them the necessary treatment they need. They shouldn’t be out on the street causing havoc and infringing on the rights of others to work and operate a business. Women and kids feel the brunt of this, and again, the government doesn’t care about them.”
